Her

He walked into the darkness without bothering to turn on the light. Everything was exactly where it should be. He sat on the bench and pulled a drag on his cigarette then placed in the crystal ashtray he knew was there. He ran his fingers through his gray but still thick hair and then placed them on the keys.

His touch was light and gentle as if touching the naked back of a lover…caressing. The theme yielded and began to flow from the huge instrument slowly, not wishing to give up its secret to quickly. Softly he moved it forward but neither leading nor being lead, allowing it to find its own course, its own resolution. He became the conduit for the music to live. And as the music began to find its center, its purpose, its animus…so to he found his.

He closed his eyes and let the massive fugue move freely as he knew the towering figure of the great Bach and done centuries before. The piano rumbled forth the chords as if they were rooted in the earth itself. He thundered away, holding at bay Stygian Zeus.

And when he peered into his center, there She was, holding court in his soul. Her regal figure, sweeping dark hair and mysterious eyes commanded all around. He knew then he must play…play for love, play for life, and play for Her.

He knew he must wash away all the past, the pain and the hurt and replace it with the perfection of the music. She was at the center of each note and he must not disappoint Her. He must be Her champion. He must be Apollo made flesh.

His fingers moved without conscious thought, but not with reason or vigorous passion; taking the lover in his soul to yet one more climax. The ecstasy of unbridled joy unleashed. Making that human connection that goes beyond mere words and encroaches on that divine sphere to which only the gods are allowed. Earning from the gods the perfect harmonies that make love possible.

She was not there to share it with, so he shared it with the darkness; and thought of Her.
She knows I always think of Her.
